Substack: Roger That!

I wrote “Learning How to Fly an Airplane” (link below) to help student pilots get their private pilot certificate. Now I've created a substack called “Roger That!” for all aviation lovers as well as those thinking about becoming pilots.

”Roger That!” is not about how to fly. I’m not an instructor. My perspective is what it was like as a student and new pilot to experience so many amazing things in aviation. This is one area where the beginner is an expert!

l invite you to join me in the cockpit and make your own discoveries. Explore a wide range of topics in any order you choose. Each topic follows the same format: (1) An aviation concept is introduced. (2) Examples are provided. (3) Possible applications are suggested.

Not only will "Roger That! "expand your understanding of aviation. But as you begin to think like a pilot, you will find your own applications for these concepts everywhere. I guarantee these new insights will change how you navigate through life.

Take Situational Awareness. When you’re flying an airplane there’s so much going on in and out side of the cockpit. You have a flight plan but you also have to adapt to constantly changing circumstances. Focused, disciplined awareness is your #1 resource when faced with the unexpected. Like all topics, this one gives you specific examples that demonstrate how real and important the concept is to pilots.

The source for “Roger That!” is my own learning and experience in aviation. However, I do use AI in two ways.

One, I write detailed prompts to create a first draft with Google Gemini. I do that to ensure I’m stating things accurately and not leaving anything out. But I still crosscheck what it provides with my own knowledge and refer to other sources when needed. Two, I use Google Gemini to review the text for spelling, grammatical and logical errors.

Each image I use includes attribution. None is generated by AI. A few are licensed from stock image providers. Most are copyright-free images downloaded from FAA online sources and links are included.

You can access all "Roger That!" content on Substack without having to subscribe. A free subscription is required to leave comments and access other features This is a work in progress, so I look forward to your input.

A final thought:

It is increasingly harder to find the time and money to become a pilot, private or commercial. Not everyone who wants to fly an airplane will have the opportunity. It is my hope that “Roger That!” brings you as close to the real experience as words and images can. More than anything I want to help you “break the surly bonds of Earth” and enjoy the best ride of your life.

Okay newbie, time to take this bird up and do some flying!
