Why I have a website
The purpose of this website is to share a bit of my life story — and, at age 70, help me remember it.
It does seem vain to have your own website. I have one because I like tinkering with it, and I don't like Facebook. In the old days I hand coded my first website. Now I use the latest and simplest tools I can find. If you want to know how this one was built, contact me. Btw, this is a work in progress; pages and content change often.
Actually, I wish everyone had their own website. I love learning people's life stories. In school I spent hours going through old yearbooks in the library. I looked at images and captions, and tried to imagine what people's lives were like.
For many years I interviewed people as a writer and instinctively do so (perhaps annoyingly) whenever I meet someone today. Indeed, I've met perfect strangers and had them open up in long, indepthful conversations. I often start by asking what interests them.
Here's my response to that question:
I am driven by a wide-ranging curiosity — a trait that has led me through several distinct "chapters" of life, from the structured world of corporate telecommunications and software technology to "slipping the surly bonds of Earth" as a private pilot. Now I indulge my passions as a news junkie and blogger.
So here's the current version of my story. It's inspired by the truth and reinterpreted to make sense of an atypical life. Please feel welcome to share your comments or stories from your own life. You can reach me through the Contact page.
